It can be difficult to live up to your family's legacy, especially when your father is one of the greatest medics alive. Fortunately, Carla Greer is more than up to the task! Very much her father's daughter, Doc not only inherited his codename and role as G.I. Joe's chief field medic but also his pacifism and sense of bravery as well, never hesitating to put herself at risk in order to save the lives of others. As she recently discovered, that's far from the only thing she inherited from him... As the child of a Dire Wraith father and a human mother, Doc is a hybrid of the two, retaining a human form but with many abilities common to the alien Wraiths. While this reveal has taken a toll on her and caused her teammates to distrust her, Doc has remained a loyal and dedicated member of the Joe team.

In cases where she's working alongside her father, Carla naturally tends to be referred to as Doc Jr..

Fiction[edit | edit source]

Origins[edit | edit source]

Carla was born while her father was undergoing his residency at the John Hopkins School of Medicine Doc Sr. profile in Baltimore, Maryland. Feeling motivated to live up to her father's legacy rather than intimidated by the prospect, Carla received a full ride to John Hopkins University and completed her undergraduate education and med school there. She then moved to Detroit, where she took a position at one of the city's most underserved hospitals. Still wanting more, Carla then joined the military with hopes of becoming a member of G.I. Joe. Receiving her invitation after graduating top of her class from the Army Medical Department Officer Advanced Course, Carla took her father's old codename Doc and became the team's first legacy member. Celebrity Soldier[edit | edit source]

Around the same time she joined, the formerly secret G.I. Joe team went public as a team of "celebrity soldiers". As she prepared to go off on her first mission to the Cobra controlled town of Warrenton, Ohio, her father tried to impart some wisdom to her but mostly ended up annoying her by coming off as too fussy. As the team was en route to their destination, Doc spoke with the team's embedded blogger Hashtag and proved to be unfamiliar with the young "soldier"'s prior work. After the Joe's Skystorm was shot down, Doc received a broken arm from the crash and hid out in a basement with Hashtag and Cover Girl, the three of them having gotten separated from their teammates. Homefront, Part 1 Seeing a mysterious explosion off in the distance, Doc expressed hope that their teammates were the ones behind it before asking Cover Girl if she'd be able to fire on Americans if worse came to worse. After Hashtag inadvertently gave their position away by livetweeting what was going on, Doc tried to protect her from Cover Girl's fury by saying the GPS in her phone would've given them away anyways. As they began encountering the Cobra loyalist citizens that were storming the building, Doc rushed up to the building's roof with Hashtag. Homefront, Part 2 Passing out once she reached the top, Doc was concerned she was hallucinating when the first thing she saw after waking up was a drone calling out to her in Tunnel Rat's voice. Having found out where their missing teammates were hiding out and that Shipwreck was in critical condition, Doc explained the situation to her recently returned teammates and that the only safe way to get to them was by jumping from rooftop to rooftop.

After arriving at the junkyard, Doc explained to Roadblock that she had broken her dominant arm, making it impossible for her to operate on Shipwreck. However, she did think she could maybe walk someone else through it, something Quick Kick volunteered for. As the other Joes left to infiltrate Cobra's base inside the local mall, Doc walked Kick through the process and helped out with other aspects of the surgery when she could. As Quick Kick pulled out a rather large piece of shrapnel that was burrowing towards Shipwreck's heart, he rather awkwardly asked Doc if she had a boyfriend, a question she was slightly taken aback by. The awkward moment was made all the more awkward by a team of Cobra troopers suddenly storming the shack they were in, ordering Doc and Kick to get down on the ground. Fortunately, Shipwreck had regained consciousness and quickly took out the Cobra troops with Roadblock's machine gun. Homefront, Part 4 Making their way back into town, the three of them were trapped in the flames that resulted from Baroness detonating the bombs Cobra planted around Warrenton and told Duke as much over the radio. After they escaped, destroying some local buildings with a Maggot to clear a path out, and the team returned to their base on Governor's Island, Doc took some leave to go see The Book of Mormon with Quick Kick, something the two of them insisted wasn't a date. During a test of their Air Commando glider and quantum stealth technology, Doc and her teammates spared against Quick Kick in disguise as Snake Eyes, the exercise ending when Kick broke character to grab Doc's nose. As the team went back inside their base and received Hashtag's report that the Threat Matrix was showing three major hotspots that could become potential major terrorist attacks, Doc noted that any of these attacks could happen in a matter of hours. However, Duke had mysteriously acquired a set of coordinates of another imminent attack and called Doc to join his team to investigate it. Threat Matrix, Part 1 Heading towards the Statue of Liberty in the Killer W.H.A.L.E., Doc used a megaphone to warn the attackers to stand down and later grabbed a rocket launcher to destroy the enemy watercraft after Shipwreck deduced the B.A.T. piloted craft were packed with explosives. Later, as the Joes split up to investigate the various Threat Matrix hot spots, Doc was sent on her own to investigate reports of American nationalists plotting a biochemical terror attack on the Roosevelt Island tramway. Threat Matrix, Part 2 Once she arrived, however, she didn't see any evidence of the reported bomb that was planted and called Duke to tell him as much. However, once she actually got on the tram she discovered the bomb she was looking for in the form of a suicide vest strapped to an unresponsive woman. Threat Matrix, Part 3 Unable to get a hold of Duke, Doc cycled through her teammates before finally reaching Shipwreck. As she explained the situation, the timer on the vest began ticking, causing panic to spread throughout the tram. With Shipwreck not able to arrive in time, Doc took it upon herself to dive through the window with the woman in tow, struggling to remove the vest before it exploded. Landing in the East River just as Shipwreck and Quick Kick arrived in the Killer W.H.A.L.E., Doc explained that she realized that the bacteria inside the bomb needed air to breath, rendering the explosive harmless now that it was submerged. Threat Matrix, Part 4

Doc took part in a mission to South America where the Joes attacked what was supposed to a Cobra convoy transporting missiles but, as Doc discovered, were actually carrying medicine. Siren's Song

Five years after Doc's induction into the Joes, her place on the team was remembered by Scarlett as she gave her statement to the senate during a hearing about the future of G.I. Joe. The Fall of G.I. Joe Part One

International Hero[edit | edit source]

When G.I. Joe was recommissioned to replace the EDC as Earth's guardians against Cybertronians, Doc was brought back onto the team. After the Space Knight Rom killed Joe Colton and several other Joes, Doc was assigned to perform an autopsy what little remained of her teammates. Though she tried to share her misgivings over whether the alien was actually hostile or not with Scarlett, her commander didn't want to hear it and told her to get back to her job. This prompted Doc to make an ill-considered joke about how little she had to investigate, earning her a fierce reprimand. The Divine Source of Liberty TFWikiFavicon.png As she completed her investigation of the "smears" of the dead Joes, Doc reported to Scarlett that their DNA indicated that they weren't human. O Ship of State TFWikiFavicon.png

On a mission to Tokyo, Doc accompanied Rock 'n Roll and Roadblock as they chased down a member of the Red Shadows. After the ninjas were placed under police custody, Doc returned to G.I. Joe's new headquarters Lemuria and assisted her father and Grand Slam in the development of a device capable of detecting Dire Wraiths. Curiously, as Doc Sr. scanned her with the device, it picked her up as a Dire Wraith, confusing her as she thought Slam was supposed to be an expert with alien technology. G.I. Joe vol. 5 #1 TFWikiFavicon.png On her next mission, Doc was part of the team sent to Hohhot to liberate Inner Mongolia from the clutches of Crystal Ball and the Dreadnoks. As the team's guides led them to Crystal Ball's palace, they discovered that they'd been set up and that their guides were actually Zandar and Zarana in disguise. As the Dreadnoks attacked, Doc saved Rock 'n Roll from Ripper's knife shooting machine gun with a shield projector created by her dad and Grand Slam, unfortunately using up the device's single charge in the process. G.I. Joe vol. 5 #2 TFWikiFavicon.png As legions of mind controlled civilians began swarming the Joes, Doc began to feel some kind of tingling in her head and urged her teammates that they get them away from Crystal Ball. As the plan changed into getting Crystal Ball away from the civilians and the team rushed out of the mansion, Doc was terrified to discover Cover Girl had yet to return with some kind of vehicle for them to escape in. G.I. Joe vol. 5 #3 TFWikiFavicon.png After Cover Girl finally did return with a vehicle, Doc kept watch over Crystal Ball as the Dreadnoks gave them chase. Panicking as Zanzibar made a move on the Joes, Doc threw up her arms and mysteriously shot some kind of energy blast from her hands, taking the Dreadnok down. Confused by this, Doc was taunted by Crystal Ball, who found it quite amusing that she didn't even realize what she was. With their jeep on it's last legs, the Joes got out and made their last stand against the Dreadnoks before Skywarp suddenly arrived and took Doc into custody, claiming to do so on Scarlett's orders. G.I. Joe vol. 5 #4 TFWikiFavicon.png

Back at the Lemuria, Doc learned that she was taken into custody because it was discovered Doc Sr. was actually a Dire Wraith and that she had unknowingly been a Wraith-Human hybrid her entire life. Locked inside her quarters, Doc listened to Scarlett, Grand Slam, and Lifeline argue about what to do with her. Under the stress of being held prisoner, discovering she didn't even know who she was anymore, learning that her father was in a coma, and now having to listen to the other three argue about what to with her like she wasn't right there, Doc screamed at them to stop as alien tentacles emerged from her wrists before falling to her knees and into Grand Slam's arms. G.I. Joe vol. 5 #5 TFWikiFavicon.png After thinking it over a bit longer, Scarlett decided to let Doc out of custody, allowing her to join the team traveling underground to find the source of the giant monsters that had were attacking the surface. While new Joe recruit Salvo was concerned about Doc accompanying them, Rock 'n Roll was happy to see her.

Once underground, the team discovered a pair of small fluffy creatures that Doc was called out to scan. Once she began, however, she suddenly began hearing another shrill noise in her head, causing her to panic and realize that Dire Wraith magic was behind the sound. This sound evidently also caused the creatures to mutate into the same gigantic monsters the Joes had been sent to eliminate. When one of the "Fatal Fluffies" smacked Spirit away, Doc was quick to chase after him to see if he was okay. G.I. Joe vol. 5 #6 TFWikiFavicon.png Once she got to him, Spirit called her attention to the fact that Rock 'n Roll had mutated into a gigantic monster as well. Arriving to the scene just as Rock and Skywarp's clash destroyed one of the Mole Pods the team had traveled in, Doc shot her wrist tentacles out and wrapped them around Rock to siphon the Wraith magic out of his system until he returned to human form, reminding him all the while that his mistakes don't make him a literal or metaphorical monster. Taking care of him as he regained consciousness, Doc urged Rock not to volunteer for the suicide mission of detonating the bombs that would destroy the Fatal Fluffies' nest G.I. Joe vol. 5 #7 TFWikiFavicon.png but ultimately wasn't able to convince him. As he and Skywarp prepared to go, Doc gave her comrade a teary eyed farewell hug. As the remaining Joes made their way back to the surface in a Mole Pod, the sound of a huge explosion reverberated through the cave, causing Doc to begin crying into Roadblock's chest. G.I. Joe vol. 5 #8 TFWikiFavicon.png

Doc had no chance to rest after she returned to the surface, having to almost immediately leave for The Hague to stop the Dreadnoks from breaking the Baroness and Crystal Ball out of prison. After Rock 'n Roll and Skywarp suddenly arrived to back their team up, having managed to escape the explosion at the last second, Doc was overjoyed to see Rock was still alive and embraced him after the battle. Doc was part of the Joe team sent to retrieve the Talisman and Garrison Kreiger from the Onyx facility in Buenos Aires. As the Joes approached the facility, the traitorous Centurion suddenly activated the building's automated defenses and used them to attack the team. Diving onto the roof after their transport was bisected by the building's forcefield, Doc and the others began fighting back against the Oktober Guard and Red Shadows who were led there by Baron Ironblood. When Eagles Scream TFWikiFavicon.png After Ironblood was unmasked by Sgt. Savage as being Joe Colton in disguise, Doc noticed that Kreiger had gotten loose from his restraints. Ghost in the Machine TFWikiFavicon.png

While Earth was being inducted into the Cybertronian Council of Worlds, Doc was inside the Lemuria monitor womb watching the event live on television with her fellow Joes. As Starscream approached the podium to give his opening address, the ceremony was suddenly interrupted by a huge explosion followed by a massacre of Cybertronian civilians led by Baron Ironblood. As the Joes lost signal, Doc wondered aloud what they were supposed to do to stop Ironblood given that he and his forces were on a different planet. Once it was discovered Colton's base of operations was a bunker in the Swiss Alps, Doc was part of the team sent to investigate it. Though she was easily able to hack open the entrance, the next door they encountered had much more troublesome encryption that she was only able to bypass after Scarlett correctly guessed the proper code. First Strike #1 TFWikiFavicon.png After reaching Colton's office, a trap in the form of hundreds of Red Shadows was sprung on the Joes. As they fought their way back out, Doc began to hear some kind of ticking sound that indicated to Scarlett that the entire base was actually wired to explode. First Strike #2 TFWikiFavicon.png

Doc participated in the joint assault on Castle Destro made by G.I. Joe, M.A.S.K., and the Cybertronians Soundwave, Stormclash, and Skyburst to gain control of the M.A.S.S. Device Colton's team used to reach Cybertron. Once they reached the teleporter, Scarlett ordered Doc and Quick Kick to stay behind on Earth to tell the others where she and the others had gone and to formulate a Plan B just in case they failed to stop Colton. First Strike #3 TFWikiFavicon.png

When his first team made up of people who just happened to be around proved ineffective against the forces of V.E.N.O.M., interim Joe commander Shipwreck made Doc a part of his refined fast-response team so she could lend medical and tentacle support. After the Cobra-allied V.E.N.O.M. agents popped up in New York City, Doc accompanied her team and focused on getting injured NYPD officers out of the line of fire. G.I. Joe: First Strike TFWikiFavicon.png After the V.E.N.O.M. agents formed King Cobra, Doc continued to hang back and urged her commander to figure out a way to take the mech down. Once they did, she joined her teammates in having a celebratory hamburger made with real beef rather than some vegan substitute aboard Lemuria. M.A.S.K.: First Strike TFWikiFavicon.png

Doc was sent to Mexico City to stop Cesspool and his Army Ants from holding the city hostage with a nuclear bomb. On this mission, Doc had to explain to Skywarp why he had to be the same size as his allies when they were shrunken down to the scale of the Army Ants. After saving them both from a suicide bomber ant with her forcefield generator, she told Skywarp to go save Rock 'n Roll, thinking it wouldn't be in his interests to lose the one member of the Joes that was willing to put up with him. Scarlett's Strike Force #1 TFWikiFavicon.png

After the Lemuria was besieged by Mutant Cybertroninas, Doc tended to Lady Jaye after she injured her arm fighting back against the invaders. While Jaye teased that Doc was keeping her from going back out because she wanted her protection, Doc scoffed that she'd seen how Jaye punched with her uninjured arm and was unimpressed. Hi-Tech begged for either of the Docs to be called so they could tend to the mortally wounded Mainframe. Time Will Rust TFWikiFavicon.png

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • Carla Greer was originally created for Devil's Due Press's "alternate reality" G.I. Joe: Reloaded series, in which she was a reimagined version of the traditional male Doc character. DDP would later import her into their "mainstream" continuity as Carl's niece, who took his place on the G.I. Joe team (after he died in the original Marvel Joe series). IDW decided to do the same in its third G.I. Joe series, with the small change that their version of Carla was Carl's daughter, rather than his niece.
