Chronology Before Jem: Infinite

Clash's ski trip goes awry when she's tasked with taking care of Madmartigan and has to protect the cat from a trio of crazed Holograms fans!

Synopsis[edit | edit source]

Forced to take care of Madmartigan for Pizzazz while The Misfits go on tour, Clash isn't about to let cat sitting get between her and her upcoming ski trip! Keeping the kitty nice and close inside of her coat, Clash complains about Blaze's membership in the Misfits keeping the two of them apart to Misty, another friend of Clash's who has come along in Blaze's stead. As the two hit the slopes, they fail to realize that they're secretly being spied on by the trio of Graphix, Shade, and Clash's own cousin Video. As the three Holograms fangirls learn that Clash is carrying Pizzazz's precious pet, they decide to make a strike against the hated Misfits by kidnapping Madmartigan!

Heading down the slope after Clash and Misty, Graphix and Video cut the two of them off and begin arguing with them about their respective favored bands, distracting Clash long enough for Shade to sneak up from behind and give her a good shove, causing Madmartigan to leap from her coat and into Graphix's arms! Though they give chase, Clash and Misty are ultimately unable to steal Mads back and are stopped when Shade uses a sound wave projector to cause an avalanche that buries the both of them. After digging their way out, Clash frets about what she and Misty are going to do, feeling hopelessly outmatched by the three Holograms fangirls. However, the problem of numbers soon corrects itself when Blaze suddenly flies in on a hang-glider!

Tracking the catnappers back to their cabin, Clash demands that they return Madmartigan to them. Though Shade quickly goes for her sound wave projector, it's effects are cancelled out by the harmonious sound of Blaze's singing, causing Shade's device to blow up in her face! Already shaken by her cousin returning with Blaze (whom she's secretly a fan of), Video declares she doesn't want anymore trouble and returns Madmartigan. With Mads safe once again, Clash asks Blaze to promise not to tell Pizzazz about this incident, which she agrees to before sharing a kiss with her girlfriend and hitting the slopes with her and Misty.

Notes[edit | edit source]

Continuity notes[edit | edit source]

  • As noted in the credits for this issue, this story takes place at some point prior to the Jem: Infinite event. Where exactly that is is unclear, but given Blaze's membership in the Misfits, it must be at some point following the Dark Jem story arc that took place from Jem and the Holograms issues #11 to #16.
  • While this is the first real appearance of Video in the IDW Jem continuity, Clash's cousin had previously been mentioned in the eighth issue of Jem and the Holograms, where she'd received a flyer advertising the Holograms' upcoming Halloween party.
  • Up until this point it had been somewhat ambiguous whether or not Clash and Blaze were romantically involved or just good friends but here they are finally stated to be girlfriends.

Jem references[edit | edit source]

  • While Video was a recurring character throughout the original Jem cartoon's run and Shade seems to be an original character, the other two characters this story introduces are both some fairly deep-cut Jem references!
    • Graphix was an unproduced doll for the original Jem toyline who, despite never being released, was still showcased at the 1988 ToyFare expo and became something of a fan favorite curiosity among Jem fans. Between her making her in-fiction debut in this comic and Integrity Toys finally releasing a Graphix doll earlier in 2017, she's had a pretty good year!
    • Misty, while not directly based on any pre-exisiting Jem characters, may owe her oddly normal name to an earlier version of the original 80s Jem pitch, where in the character who would eventually become Jerrica Benton was named Misty instead!

Other notes[edit | edit source]

  • Several months prior to this issue's release or the announcement of Jem Dimensions, artist Sophie Campbell showed off her character designs for Graphix and Shade on her Tumblr, saying she'd drawn them as part of a one-shot story she didn't think was happening anymore. Though those designs have no longer gone to waste, she wasn't completely wrong, as her original idea for their introductory story was significantly different from this story.
