Things come to a head in Washington, D.C. when Firewall makes probes into the mole within G.I. Joe.

Synopsis[edit]

As Firewall gazes out the window, she thinks to herself: she'll never be G.I. Joe, at least not in the way that she had hoped. After graduating from Annapolis, she quickly distinguished herself as the best artillery officer around; but all that changed when her team's Blackhawk was shot down, leaving her as one of only two survivors. Through hard work she recovered in less than a year, with her hair turning grey in the process, but before she could return to the field she was made to take six months of mandatory desk duty... and as she inadvertently distinguished herself again—this time, as the best administrative officer on the East Coast—that desk work was extended to a matter of years, her every transfer request refused. She was eventually sought out for her administrative skill, and became, as she cynically muses, the "best den mother in the armed forces".

Firewall walks in on Chameleon and Lady Jaye's investigation into the Cobra mole in their installation... or rather, Chameleon's investigation, as she has refused Lady Jaye's help and thrown her out. Firewall scolds the two for bickering when two Joes are dead, which Chameleon takes as an opportunity to raise her theory—with Cobra's increased aggression since the destruction of Section Twenty, it's possible that their mole has given up on trying to stay undetected, rather than having long-term goals as they had been assuming. Lady Jaye rushes off to the facility's armory in response, with Firewall ordering the master-at-arms to take Chameleon with her.

Rather than going to alert the rest of the Joes as she had said, Firewall descends to the installation's vehicle hangar, where she finds Steeler—her prime suspect, now revealed as Cobra agent Black-Out—attempting to hijack a tank. Firewall attempts to persuade the mole to come quietly, but he manages to overwhelm her and take her gun, taking Firewall as a hostage when Lady Jaye and Chameleon arrive to back her up; the fight that follows is brutal and protracted, with Jaye shot in the shoulder and stabbed and Firewall apparently killed. Having overwhelmed the Joes, Black-Out prepares to kill Chameleon, but is suddenly shot through the window by a sniper: Blacklight, who was aiming for Chameleon. Chameleon takes refuge from further shots behind a tank, and lies there in her own blood, surrounded by her own fallen allies...

Quotes[edit]

"How did you know it was me?"
"I didn't, Steeler. But I guessed that if it was you, you'd be here."
"And how's that?"
"All you ever wanted to do is drive a tank, and they never let you. I can relate."

-Firewall and Black-Out

"Beg for a gun for three days and that's how you shoot?"

-Lady Jaye is unimpressed with Chameleon's marksmanship.

Notes[edit]

Continuity notes[edit]

  • The biometric data that Blacklight needed to get back into the Baroness's favor is revealed to be Chameleon's; the Baroness was shown to have a grudge against Erika back in Cobra II issue 2; it's never been stated outright, but circumstantial evidence and Cobra: Special #2 heavily imply that the Baroness is Chameleon's half-sister, and the one who got her into Cobra in the first place as a favor to their mother.

G.I. Joe references[edit]

  • Firewall originated as a character in the Devil's Due G.I. Joe comics, though her character there was fairly different from her IDW incarnation.

Real life references[edit]

Other notes[edit]

  • This issue shares the opening line of "I'm never going to be G.I. Joe" with the two preceding issues.
