The Iron Grenadiers are the personal army of Destro, deployed by the Laird in both his operations with Cobra and his private business ventures. More recently, mechanical Grenadiers have surfaced in the employ of Baron Ironblood's villainous alliance; what connection, if any, these automatons have to Destro remains be seen.
A group of Iron Grenadiers, led by Darklon, assisted in Cobra's takeover of Warrenton, Ohio, taking a group of local businessmen hostage. They were subsequently present when the Baroness addressed the town's welcoming citizens.
Some time later, several Iron Grenadiers stood guard outside Castle Destro's current home in the Scottish Highlands, and greeted the Baroness as she arrived under cover of night.
While working with V.E.N.O.M. to obtain the corpse of Astrotrain, Destro sent Iron Grenadiers piloting Sting Raiders to salvage one section of the body from the Arctic Ocean. They initially proved a problem for M.A.S.K. and G.I. Joe's forces, but Gloria Baker was able to hack the submarines' weapons systems and have them fire upon each other.
Baron Ironblood's criminal conspiracy possessed a large number of robotic Iron Grenadiers, which were deployed to defend the Iron Castle when Snake Eyes was found to have infiltrated the facility. They shot dead the intruder, but when the body was identified as a robotic decoy, the real Snake Eyes revealed himself from beneath his disguise as Tomax Paoli, and proceeded to violently carve his way through the Iron Grenadiers. The ninja-commando was soon joined by the Revolutionaries, and the combined band of heroes laid waste to many more Grenadiers before making their escape via M.A.S.S. Device.
- The Iron Grenadiers are traditionally Destro's personal army in G.I. Joe fiction, although mechanical versions are a new concept for the Hasbro Universe. Their G.I. Joe vol. 3 design is directly based on the GIJoeCon 2012 Iron Grenadier action figure, while their Revolutionaries design draws on elements from several of their 2010s figures.
