With a little help from their teachers, the Starlights take their first step towards musical superstardom!

Synopsis[edit | edit source]

As The Starlights conclude their song, their teachers the Holograms praise the young girls, happy to see how far they've come since they began playing as a band. Unfortunately, the Holograms then break it to the girls that they need to cut today's practice session short. Though the Starlights plead with their mentors to let them keep going just a little bit longer, they can't agree to it and take their exit, leaving the girls to pack up themselves. As she and her bandmates depart, Raya throws out that she believes with a little more practice, she believes the Starlights will finally be ready to put on a real show! Raya's words stick into Ashley's mind, and as she rolls them over in her head, an idea finally occurs to her. The Starlights should play a show tonight! Having caught word of a local open-mic night, Ashley shares her big idea with her bandmates, most of whom are skeptical about her plan. Ba Nee, however, believes in her band's talents and agrees with Ashley, and her enthusiasm gets the others to agree as well!

Unbeknownst to the girls, their teachers were listening in on their planning and aren't quite sure what to make of it. While Jerrica isn't sure it's safe for them to go out on their own like that, Aja trusts them, believing the Starlights to have matured enough that they'll be able to handle themselves. Shana suggests they come with the girls and help them out, but when Kimber points out that kids like them would probably prefer to do this on their own without any grown-up help, Aja suggests they just follow them from the shadows just to make sure they stay out of trouble. Though Kimber tries to get out of helping so she can go on her date with Stormer, Shana refuses to let her leave and Jerrica compromises by saying Stormer can come along as well.

Lacking any sort of car, the Starlights are left having to carry all their instruments and equipment themselves, a beat-up old shopping cart the only option they have other than their own arms. As they arrive at Roasters Coffee Shop, the girls encounter an unexpected obstacle in the form of a bouncer, who informs them that the open-mic night isn't so open for kids under 18. While the girls discuss what they're going to do and turn their backs to the coffee shop though, Aja scares the bouncer away by telling him somebody wrecked his parked car. While he's gone, Jerrica sneaks up to the door and has Synergy disguise her as the bouncer. When the Starlights return and try to bargain with him, the girls are quite taken aback when he instead tells them he's had a change of heart and wants to give these passionate young musicians a chance to shine!

Having finally made it inside, the Starlights are feeling hyped up, but as their various "competitors" take the stage, that confidence begins to fade. As a harp player, a rock trio, and a soulful vocalist all take the stage and wow the people who've gathered to watch them, the Starlights aren't quite sure they'll be able to measure up. Even though she shares her bandmates nervousness, Ashley refuses to give up hope as she and the others finally take the stage. And as they play their hearts out and wind down their song "No Damsel", the Starlights look up from their instruments to find the entire crowd... dead silent. That is, the entire crowd save for five Holograms and one Misfit in the back, who all cheer for them!

As they take their leave, the Holograms shower their young students with praise, telling them how good they were and how proud they are of them. When Deidre and Lela express confusion as to why they're so proud of them when they clearly bombed, Kimber tells them that they were able to preform in front of an audience of strangers this early into their musical careers means they've overcome their first major obstacle. To Kimber's point, Jem shares with the girls that she once had terrible stage fright and even still does from time to time, but it's thanks to the support of her bandmates that she's able to overcome it time and time again. What the Starlights did took a lot of courage, and if they can keep that up they'll be superstars in no time! As Aja teasingly amends though, that of course doesn't mean they still don't need to keep practicing.

Notes[edit | edit source]

Continuity notes[edit | edit source]

  • In an unusual case for the Dimensions series, the placement of this story in IDW's Jem continuity is unspecified. Given Raya's presence in the Holograms though, one can assume this story must at least take place at some point after the "Enter The Stingers" arc that took concluded in Jem and the Holograms #23. This would also mean this story takes place after the 2017 Jem Annual, where the Starlights were last seen before this story.
  • Ba Nee seems to have finally earned her place in the Starlights, taking on the role of a tambourine player. As per Jem #3, she previously wasn't considered experienced enough to be in the band.

Errors[edit | edit source]

  • Jerrica is depicted as mentoring the Starlights as Jem when previously she'd only been shown doing so as herself, aside from the "lesson" she and the other Holograms gave the Starlights while corrupted by Silica in Jem #12.
