Chronology Before Jem and the Holograms #21

When Shana comes down with a cold, she must rely on her sisters and her model for help finishing her fashion design finals.

Synopsis[edit | edit source]

Running a fever of 99.3 degrees, Shana despairs over how she's supposed to be able to finish her fashion design class' final project before the deadline next week while she's sick, the fact that she got her favorite model adding to the pressure she's feeling. While Jerrica and Aja insist that Shana take care of herself, Kimber suggests that she try having Synergy project holograms of her finished design onto her model. While Shana appreciates the thought, the other two Benton sisters inform Kimber that her plan won't work for a whole host of reasons, not least of all meaning that they'd have to let more people in on their secret Holographic Computer. Sick or not though, the craft of actually creating the clothes with her bare hands is a big part of why Shana enjoys fashion design in the first place, and she'll just need to push through her illness to get the job done!

Since she's allowed to have assistants so long as she does all the heavy lifting, Shana's sisters volunteer to help their enfeebled sister out with her project. Unfortunately though, none of them are quite as versed in the arts of sewing and cutting as Shana is, leading Shana to quietly feel thankful she still has music to fall back on... As her worrying begins to pick up though, Shana suddenly receives a surprise visit from her model Andre! Having heard that she'd gotten sick, Andre came to see Shana as fast as they possibly could, wanting to lend her a helping hand in designing her dress for them! While Shana initially voices some objections, Andre will hear none of it, and eventually the two of them get to work. While they certainly have their work cut out for them, especially since they now only have time to make a single garment, Shana and Andre work tirelessly on the project. With Andre's presence and feedback allowing Shana to make adjustments that make the garment more in line with their personal style, the two fashionistas are able to create something both of them are quite happy with!

As the fashion show where Shana's class shows off their final designs rolls around, Andre takes the catwalk in-character as their drag persona of Princess Dreia and wows the crowd with a dramatic reveal of Shana's dress! Backstage, Shana is feeling a rush she's only previously felt when she was on-stage as a member of the Holograms. As she shares that with Andre though, that excitement soon gives way to her once again not knowing if pursuing a career in fashion or continuing on with music is the right decision. In response, Andre places their hands on Shana's shoulders and tells her how inspiring they find Shana's fashion and music, knowing deep in their heart that Shana can find a way to do both. Overjoyed, Shana embraces Andre and tells them how that they inspire her as well, sharing how happy she was when they agreed to model for her. Just then, Shana's teacher Professor Wada approaches the two. While most students can't pull off a successful final project with just one garment in her experience, Wada was thoroughly impressed with Shana's and gives her a pass before offering Andre a spot in a photoshoot she has coming up.

As the fashion show comes to a close, Jem and the Holograms take the stage, the other three band members all wearing Holographic projections of the outfits Shana had designed but couldn't actually make before her deadline. As she and her sisters play, with Andre providing a bit of backup dancing, Shana thinks to herself that even if she doesn't know how to balance her passions just yet, she's sure she'll be able to figure things out eventually!

Quotes[edit | edit source]

"I'm still not sure how to balance my passions. Andre gave me a lot to think about, but... No. No buts. Tonight was amazing and I'm going to hold onto this feeling as long as I can!"
