The Baroness enters the game.

Synopsis[edit | edit source]

In the aftermath of the explosion in Ushkirli, Galibi's President Shefer promises that talks with Schleteva will proceed as planned and that the rebels responsible will be hunted down, before discreetly requesting American help in analysing the bomb debris. The FBI identifies Cobra design signatures in the remains of the explosives, prompting Scarlett to have her Joe team stand down on hunting Rashidov until Cobra involvement is confirmed. In the meantime, they are to investigate Duke and Big Ben, and Helix is dispatched to keep tabs, since the latter of the two won't recognize her.

At Rashidov's temporary base, Stasik confronts Isaac Craft over the news that the boy was caught on CCTV leaving the bomb. The elder rebel calls out Craft's recent behaviour, and makes no secret of the fact that if it were his choice, the boy would have been handed back to Cobra already. Elsewhere, Tomax Paoli receives the CCTV footage and has Siren confirm her son's identity, before implying that he is willing to take more extreme measures to protect Cobra's reputation from Isaac's actions. Baroness, meanwhile, sets out from the London consulate to what she claims is business in Paris, but her true final destination is a US military base in Italy, currently site of one of the peaceful protests that Tomax called for...

The next day, Spinetti and Nick also confirm Isaac as the bomber, and correctly guess that the bombing was the work of the rebels, not Cobra itself. Spinetti leaves for the US, tasking Nick with learning more about Isaac in his absence. At the Operational Support bureau in New York, he receives the messages left for him by Scarlett, and calls her back. The Joe captain asks him for help identifying their leak, unaware that it was Spinetti himself, which he promises in return for G.I. Joe's intel on Cobra.

At the border, Tomax hosts peace talks between Presidents Shefer and Bulatov, and tensions run high thanks to the bombing. Paoli convinces Shefer to offer Rashidov's region devolution and a cut of the gas pipeline profits as a token gesture, pointing out that any "bad behaviour" afterwards can be stamped out by Cobra peacekeepers with the moral high ground. Offering to present this deal to Rashidov personally, Paoli takes his leave, before calling off Duke and Big Ben's hunt for Isaac, intending to finish the job himself. He also receives news of Baroness's excursion, and, unaware of her destination, desperately hopes that she doesn't discover the situation with Craft before Tomax's plans are through.

Two days later in Myuretz, Duke and Ben receive the order to stand down, paid in full with a bonus for wasted time. Duke heads to Dagil to collect the payment, whilst Big Ben meets with their fixer to try and uncover the reason for this unexpected turn. However, Helix is tailing the ex-Joe, and two wind up in a fistfight in an alleyway. At gunpoint, Helix reveals her identity as a G.I. Joe, and that her team is concerned about Duke and Ben getting in their way. Meanwhile, Baroness stops by a safe house in Paris, where a Cobra corporal is waiting to speak to her, revealing the truth of Isaac Craft's desertion...
