The Thunderhawk is a special vehicle developed by Project Spectrum. While on the surface a seemingly ordinary red Chevrolet Camaro, the Thunderhawk can transform into a flying gull-winged jet fighter. Its primary pilot is Matt Trakker, leader of M.A.S.K.
A prototype Thunderhawk was parked outside the Project Spectrum base when the recruits showed up, with Sly Rax mocking the third-generation Camaro's antiquity. When Miles Mayhem welcomed the recruits, a holographic image of the Thunderhawk was projected to show the recruits the kind of tech with which they would fight the Cybertronians.
A year later, Matt Trakker flew a new model of the Thunderhawk to G.I. Joe headquarters, passing the prototype, now battered and scarred, on his way out of the base. Setting up shop in the basement of the Joes' Governor's Island facility, Trakker carried out maintenance on the Thunderhawk, before driving it into battle against the Transformers Kup and Aileron in Greece, driving near Kup before converting into flight mode to take on Aileron. During the subsequent skirmish, Thunderhawk took weaponsfire from the younger Autobot but survived unscathed. Back on Governor's Island, Trakker deployed in the Thunderhawk when Kup broke out with Action Man's help. Mayhem ordered Trakker to fire maximum power, but Trakker expressed doubts to Mainframe, who then ordered a firing sequence from Chinese laser satellites.
Trakker flew the Thunderhawk once more in M.A.S.K.'s assault on Autobot City. During the battle, Thunderhawk had its windshield destroyed by the Micronaut Acroyear and was sliced in half by a Dire Wraith-empowered Baron Karza. However, it was ultimately recovered by G.I. Joe for Matt to repair.
When M.A.S.K. became compromised and hunted by the authorities, Trakker drove the Thunderhawk in the team's escape from Project Spectrum HQ. When M.A.S.K. was attacked by V.E.N.O.M. at Harrison's Cave in Barbados, the Thunderhawk engaged the Switchblade in aerial combat.
