With Kimber missing and Rio having learned the truth, is this the end of The Holograms?

Synopsis[edit | edit source]

Having fallen off a cliff after she was lured to a fake date by The Stingers, a dazed Kimber is shocked to wake up next to a river of lava! Meanwhile, her sisters and girlfriend all panic as they float theories both benign and extreme as to what could have happened to her. Hoping she can help them, Aja gives Keani Akana a call, hoping that the Maui native and one of the organizers of the charity the Holograms are doing a concert for might be able to help them. Keani informs the Holograms that she's had a friend of hers in the police put out an APB for Kimber and trace her cell phone which uncharacteristically seems to be off. Suggesting that some of them go look for her while the others remain at Hale Holograms to see if she returns or calls, Keani inquires if there's any chance this might just be a practical joke. While Aja highly doubts that, the question does make Raya realize she might know who's behind this!

Running next door, Raya confronts her former bandmates Minx and Rapture, demanding that she tell them if they're behind Kimber's disappearance. Though at first they deny it, having to pretend they care for one of their enemies is too much and they break down laughing. Enraged, Aja and Stormer threaten the Stingers with bodily harm and Raya threatens to have Craig and Keani turn them loose if they don't fess up. Unfazed, Minx rolls her eyes and explains their plot to break up Kimber and Stormer, her and Rapture both continuing to be unconcerned when their informed that she's gone missing. Grabbing Jerrica, Shana, and Tony before having Rapture and Minx show them where they set up the fake rendezvous. After calling out to Kimber to no success, Minx peers over the cliff and catches a glimpse of red hair at the bottom. Taking charge, Keani orders Shana and Raya to drive down the mountain until they can get a cell signal to call an ambulance with. With them gone, Keani then fishes some ropes and harnesses out of her jeep so that she and Aja can repel down the cliff and retrieve Kimber. Once they reach her, Kimber warns the two of them to watch out for the lava... which the concussed Kimber had actually been hallucinating!

Later, at the hospital, Kimber's injuries have proven to be fairly minor and she'll be able to leave in a few hours and play the charity concert the next day. After a nurse tells the crowded hospital room to leave so the doctor can sign off on Kimber's release, everyone empties out save for her sisters. With the three of them gathered around Kimber's bed, Shana speaks up and says she needs to apologize. Though Kimber immediately assumes she's going to be leaving the band again, what Shana really wants to apologize for is for is letting a distance grow between her and them after she got back from her internship and found out she'd been replaced as drummer, the scare with Kimber reminding her how precious her sisters and the time they spend together is to her. Jerrica then apologizes to her for not letting her know how much she was missed since they didn't want her to feel like she was obligated to stay in the band, saying that they never want to struggle like they did without her again. As the four of them group hug, Raya then steps into the room and closes the door behind her, telling the four of them that she knows their secret... that Jerrica and Jem are the same person! Explaining that while she intends to keep their secret, the crew from The Misfits' reality show approached her saying that they knew that she knew some big secret about the Holograms. With Raya assuming that Rapture and Minx must have tipped them off without even knowing the Holograms had a big secret, Jerrica crafts a plan to get back at the two of them while also getting the reality show crew off their backs by using Synergy to impersonate Rapture and let the TV crew catch her insulting Minx!

The next day, the Holograms play their charity concert to a giant, excited crowd. As they finish, Jerrica says she isn't sure if she can give it all up if Rio were to leak the truth about her identity but Shana and Aja assure her that even if he does they aren't giving up the band without a fight. As the Holograms return home, bringing Raya along since she's in need of a place to stay, the other four all suddenly crash into Kimber and fall to the ground after she freezes in shock at the sight of Rio sitting on their porch. Jerrica cautiously approaches and invites him in, Rio suggesting that they go to the music studio so they can talk in private. Once there, they sit in silence for a while until Jerrica asks how he's been. Saying that he's felt better, Rio admits that he doesn't know what's going to happen to them. While he's still in love with her, the revelation that she's been lying to him about Jem and was seemingly cheating on him is a lot for him to deal with and he isn't sure if there's anything either of them can do except just wait and see. Addressing the other elephant in the room, Rio tells Jerrica he's decided not to go public about Jem, feeling that its not worth it to end the careers of people he was coming to see as family to make his. He does however advise them to go public with their secret as soon as they possibly can, feeling that since something as big as this can't stay secret forever and that it would be better that they tell it and control their own narrative. As Jerrica agrees and thanks him, Rio touches her face and looks into her eyes for a moment before suddenly leaving, asking her to tell her sisters goodbye for him.

As she sits alone in the studio holding back tears, Jerrica suddenly hears whispering coming from behind the door. Opening it, she finds her sisters and Raya standing outside, the four of them all having pressed their ears up to the door to listen and make sure she was okay. Bringing Jer in for a group hug, Kimber tries to lighten the mood while Aja, Shana, and Raya all voice their support for her and promise that the five of them will always stick together!

Notes[edit | edit source]

Continuity notes[edit | edit source]

  • Raya learned about Jerrica's dual identity back in issue #23.

Errors[edit | edit source]

  • This issue's cast page lists several characters who don't appear in this issue, including Pizzazz, Roxy, Jetta, Blaze, Clash, The Fox, and Riot.
  • Jerrica and Rio were speaking in the music studio/pool house, which is presumably not connected to the rest of the house and likely doesn't have a ton of ways in or out, making it seem a bit strange how the rest of the Holograms could hang out outside the door and not know that Rio left.
  • At no point in this entire story arc set in Hawaii was there a reference to Misfits In Hawaii.

Other notes[edit | edit source]

  • Originally solicited for release in April, this issue finally saw release in the second week of June due to the heavy delays that have plagued a number of IDW's comics throughout late 2016 and 2017.
  • Backmatter for the issue includes a reader's guide to the upcoming Jem: Infinite crossover, a look at the covers for Jem and the Holograms: Infinite's first issue, a thank you letter from editor Sarah Gaydos, and a gallery of the main covers for all 26 issues of Jem. Digital versions of the issue also contain a "digital ashcan" for the 2017 Jem annual.
