The realities of invasion necessitate some manner of home base or stronghold. For the Dire Wraiths, that role is fulfilled by the Wraith Hives, organic structures that serve as markers of the Wraiths' presence on targeted worlds.

In spite of the Wraiths' ability to disguise themselves as organic aliens, the Wraith Hives were a hallmark of their invasions and recognized by the Space Knights as targets. Earthfall: Part One

In the mid-19th century, a group of Wraiths had established a hive on a unknown planet for use as a base. Within, they reviewed the actions of the recently deceased Vekktral and declared that they would follow only the path of magic. Shining Armor #5 TFWikiFavicon.png

When making planetfall on Earth, Rom was surprised to find the planet lacked any Wraith Hives in spite of the planet being a target for Wraith conquest.
